There’s proof that Mercedes-Benz is continuing on with the development of a hybrid in the form of a Mercedes S-Class.

The evidence is that ZF, a German parts supplier, will be building the electric motors for the car.

The hybrid S-Class will include a gasoline V6 engine and a ZF transmission which includes an electric motor rather than a torque converter. This allows the car to run on electric power at low speeds and provides a boost to the engine during hard acceleration.

Mercedes says that the powertrain can generate 299 horsepower and will go from 0 to 62 mph less than 8 seconds.

The S-Class Hybrid is scheduled to go into production in 2009.
