It's a sort of modern day El Camino (from Australia!), which in and of itself can be seen as slightly odd since the El Camino was a Chevy.
Regardless, competitor Ford Motor Co. is setting its sights on the “Ute” by offering its own variant on the theme, the FG Falcon which, too, is from Down Under. Before all you blue oval diehards get your hopes up, relax, it won't be coming to the states, at least not in this generation.
For all you Aussies out there, you'll be happy to know that the FG Falcon will do a better impersonation of a truck that its competitor. Equipped with de rigueur for a truck leaf springs and solid axle in the rear, as opposed to the “Ute” coil sprung independent setup. This of course allows the FG Falcon, depending on model, to carry a payload anywhere from 1264 lb. to 2733 lb. and tow up to 5070 lb.
The FG Falcon will also offer a variety of power train options, a 388 bhp quad-cam V-8 or a turbo I-6 with 362 bhp. Of course, the possibility of hot versions to come later also exists.
Our take? It should go without saying that the availability of an FG Falcon variant lay solely on the success of the G8 “Ute”, but it would be nice to see it here regardless just to see a battle along the lines of what transpired in the late 60's early 70's
