Cars of the Future. Today

We guess that ever since the sci-fi movies started showing futuristic cars, auto buffs have been captured by their “coolness.”

Saucer looking vehicles, jet styled vehicles, curvy looking motorcycle like cars, strange looking boxy vehicles, etc., all have tapped our imagination of what we could be seeing on the road later in our lives.

Well, it appears that the editors of auto magazines have also been touched. Now many of our dream vehicles are starting to show up as concept vehicles and, even better, many more are just starting to go into production.

Here’s a list from PC Magazine of some futuristic cars to be looking for:

The AirCar. Yup. A flying car. The AirCar features four doors, four to five seats and a foldable wing. It cost about $450,000 to build and can be driven but it can’t be flown yet. Thank god.

Rinspeed sQuba. Identified as the world’s first real submersible car, this vehicle features three motors -- one offers propulsion on land while the other two propel the vehicle to a depth of 32 feet of water. The driver and passengers are supplied with air when under water.

Tong City Bike. This concept vehicle includes an all-in-one housing for the brake system, drive train, shock absorbers and gears. It also features integrated light tubes which can be customized to show any color thus making riders more visible in the dark.

Skiing Segway. A modified Segway, this vehicle includes back wheels while the original Segway does not. This is supposed to offer more speed and better stability.

Toyota Hi-Ct. An eco-friendly electric concept vehicle “fills up” through the AC socket. It features a removable trunk and a bicycle/surfboard deck.

Skateboard Car. A transportation design student in Germany came up with this concept vehicle that looks like a skateboard. It features two seats that fold flat when the car is parked. The folded seats are hidden, so the vehicle looks like a sculpture.

Our take? What? No car that can go into outer space?
