Canada turns to Wheat for Ethanol

For the last 25 years or so Canada has been a minor contributor to the stock of ethanol. However, this year the country has opened two new plants that will increase the total ethanol capacity which is expected to double.

But don't be looking for more cornfields up in the Great White North. According to Biofuel Magazine, the Western part of the country is making it using wheat instead of corn. Apparently the country's trying, just like the US, to reduce its fuel dependency on foreign sources. Also, using wheat will help build the region's market potential, more jobs, and better use of "lower wheat" products.

Our take? We guess, like it or not, ethanol is with us to stay. Countries and the private sector are committing to it to say nothing of the major car manufacturers. For now it will impact the supply of food. But technology will be developed that will allow more and more ethanol to be made without foodstock as a source. Just be patient!
