It is said that the sale of convertibles follows the mood of the country. When the mood is good, sales are up; when the mood is bad, sales are down.

Well, the mood is down and so sales. For example, sales are reported to be off for some of the most popular models like the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. According to Business Week, stats show sales of the former dropping 22.9 percent in the first quarter compared to the same time period last year while the Sky fell 24.6 percent.

Additional models suffering a drop in sales include the Toyota Camry Solara convertible, the Volkswagen Beetle convertible, and the Mazda MX-5/ Miata.

As typical, higher end vehicles were not as affected. For luxury convertibles like the Volvo C70 and the Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster, sales were up. The C70 showed a 48.4 percent increase in the first quarter and SLK jumped 25.8 percent during the same period.

Our take? As usual, the rich can let a little sunshine in while driving while the rest of keep our lids shut.
