It has been said before, and now those same sentiments are starting to reverberate through the auto industry once more. And what is being said? The days of high horsepower, big vehicles, big motors, and excess as we know, it will soon be over.
The Dodge Challenger is soon to be upon us, soon after that a new Chevrolet Camaro and a redesigned ford Mustang are to follow. As it is, we can already enjoy products with HEMI's. Large rear, drive, V-8 power is available at a reasonable price in the G8. The fastest, most powerful street Corvette ever created is in the here and now.
You better enjoy it, all of it.
Experts don't think we'll be left adrift in a sea of mediocre product like in the post 70's gas crunch, but the days of big power from means as we know it are over. Likely too, the proliferation of niche products like the pony cars, and super sports cars. The upcoming Pontiac G8 “Ute” a modern El Camino of sorts, will likely only be around for a short time as well.
Cars won't necessarily get slower though, new technologies will see to that, but the need for the auto manufacturers to meet the imposed 35 mpg standard will likely see manufacturers move towards smaller, lighter cars with more advanced, alternative propulsion means.
Our take? Cars won't suddenly become worse. Oh, and he American V-8 will always be around. It'll just be special, rather than ubiquitous.
