Remember when Toyota used to make fun to drive rear wheel drive coupes and not just boring old Camrys and Hybrids?
While Scion does offer the TC sports coupe, there isn’t much sporting about it unless you get the aftermarket TRD supercharger.
We remember back to the late seventies and most of the eighties when Toyota built its sports coupe reputation by offering the fuel efficient yet fun Celica and Corvette rivaling Supra. We're sure it would be too much to ask of Toyota, though, for them to resurrect the flip up headlights that were the must have fashion accessory on a coupe of that period.
Oddly enough, Toyota is now in the development stage with Subaru to bring an affordable rear wheel drive sports coupe into the marketplace. If you are wondering why Subaru, it is because Toyota recently purchased a sizeable stake in their parent company known as Fuji Heavy Industries. Can we smell a new Celica?
The rumor mill is saying that Subaru will also sell its own AWD sports car built on the same platform. While platform sharing can be dangerous—just ask GM—one can only hope Subaru and Toyota will come up with suitably divergent styling strategies. Let’s also hope Subaru doesn’t let the guy who designed the new Impreza have a go. That could be a disaster.
On the Toyota side of things, apparently they are looking to use a boxer engine from the Subaru lineup. We question the logic of using said powerplants as they are not very efficient and do not make a lot of power unless they are turbocharged. We're sure Toyota, with its vast resources could come up with a screaming four or even six cylinder engine that would get every boy-racer drooling into his Xbox.
