General Motors recently showcased its Pontiac G8 'sports truck' at the New York Auto Show.
The G8 is a two-door, rear-wheel-drive car based pickup. Car enthusiasts attending the show called for the truck to be named 'El Camino' after the original Chevrolet El Camino.
The G8 concept does not have an official name yet and GM is asking the public to help name it. Until April 15, fans can visit the Pontiac website and make suggestions. Be warned: a massive grass roots campaign has helped to give the name El Camino a major head start.
The concept will be put into production and released into the market as a 2010 model.
Our take? Apparently, there is a little “political incorrectness” within General Motors concerning naming a Pontiac product with a former Chevrolet product’s name. In fact, General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz said that the company considered a Chevrolet version of the G8 to be named El Camino but it was decided not to go through with it.
The General Motors Holden Ltd. Division in Australia assembles the G8 and has the capacity to construct 200,000 vehicles a year for sale worldwide.
