Consumer Reports released their 2008 auto issue, naming the Toyota Prius as the most fuel efficient car available to consumers at 44mpg.

Following behind are the Honda Civic Hybrid, the Honda Fit, and the Toyota Yaris.

Mid-size and large cars were led by the Toyota Camry, the Nissan Altima hybrid, and the Mercedes Benz e320 Bluetec Diesel.

SUVs included the Toyota Highlander, Lexus RH400, and Toyota Rav-4.

Additional information can be found here. It's interesting to note that the only non-japanese car on the list is German, and that none of the much vaunted American offerings even made it on the list of top contenders. The Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, 2008 Green Car of the Year at the LA Auto show, doesn't even appear on this list. Go figure.
