Pontiac Solstice gets Hardtop for New York Auto Show

This year's New York Auto Show may have a surprise in the form a fixed-roofed Pontiac Solstice (i.e., coupe), possibly to be given a “Targa” badge.

Apparently however, unlike a traditional targa, the car will instead feature separate removable panels over both the driver and passenger seats... like a traditional T-top.

Regardless, the car should be mechanically identical to the normal Solstice roadster and, more significantly, GM's Bob Lutz promised any Solstice coupe would look exactly like the 2002 Solstice Coupe concept.

Our take? Either the insider reporting this to the outide world is confused about the roof design or the stigma associated with T-tops is such that GM feels they have to move away form it.

Or maybe there is no removable section and GM is instead trying to evoke imagery from something like the Targa Florio with the designation, like Porche with Carrera for the Carrera Panamericana.

At least it should be a stunner; the Solstice roadster looks, for all intensive purposes, identical to the concept, so a promise of the same for the fixed roof version bodes well for the upcoming model
