Chrysler to go Dark for Two Weeks

In some countries it is not uncommon to see major companies close their doors for a period of time during holiday season. We guess it is to help make employees happy by giving them a good number of weeks off to enjoy a break.

For some reason, we don’t think that is why Chrysler has announced that it plans to shut down for two weeks. Instead of a siesta, Chrysler is thinking about the bottom line. The closure is meant to cut costs.

The shut down will be looked upon as a corporate wide vacation break and will take place from July 7 through July 14.

This does not mean that the company will be totally shut down with lights off in all departments. Some operations will be working to support “business critical activities.” Other sections will continue to have a minimum support staff on hand.

Chrysler continues with its plans to eliminate four of its models -- the Dodge Magnum, the PT Cruiser convertible, the Chrysler Pacifica and the Chrysler Crossfire. The company will also be cutting shifts at five North American plants which will cause the elimination of 8,500 to 10,000 hourly jobs in 2008.
