Corn-derived ethanol produced in the United States poses an increased risk of jeopardizing marine life in the Gulf of Mexico by further expanding an oxygen-poor 'dead zone' that forms every summer. Nitrogen from fertilizer run-off flows down the Mississippi River and causes an algae bloom which literally suffocates the marine layers below the continental shelf.

Does the desire to become more environmentally friendly with our fuels pose additional threats yet to be discovered? Post your thoughts!
