Wooden Supercar leaves Lamborghini, Porshe in Splinters

We’ve seen cars made of steel, plastics, aluminum, polymers, and all sorts of biodegradable materials. Now comes word of a car that is made of wood.

The concept was constructed by Joe Harman, who built the car as part of a project at North Carolina State University.

But what really caught folks' attention were claims the  Splinter was the world's first wooden "supercar". Motor Trader reports that the car, with a top speed of 240 mph(!) is able to outrun Porsche or Lamborghini. That’s possible because wood is so much lighter than other materials being used to construct cars these days. The Splinter weighs in a stealth 1,134kg or 2,500 pounds.

Our take? One idea that should be considered is to include a sprinkler system in the interior of the car just in case the wood catches on fire. But think of the benefits. If you are lost in a very cold out-in-the-middle-of-no-where area and there is no chance of rescue for days or even months, you got the wood you need to start a warm fire. And if you stocked the trunk with some burgers, you have a few lunches and dinners to cook over that fire. Oh, one more thing, anyone who drives this car can’t be considered anything else but green.
