Hummer Myths Revealed

A new book is out.  It's called "The Hummer: Myths and Consumer Culture" by Elaine Cardenas and Ellen Gorman (Editors).  Let us explore some of those ideas about the unique SUVs

For one, is there anybody on earth who hasn't heard some of these stereotypes?  That Hummers are rich boys toys, environmentally destructive, unattractive, completely unnecessary for driving on a paved road, not a real practical or protective vehicle in the war abroad (it can be blown to bits, could get a flat tire, engine might burn, run out of gas, you fill in the rest), and is considered by some to fulfill some odd longing unfilled void in a man's childhood?

What?!  You say you've got loads of dough and your friends are impressed by the outrageous vehicle?  You can tell by the gaze in on-lookers eyes that they're envious of your less than 20 miles to the gallon monstrosity?

In fact, there is an active war being fought:  a war is between environmentally-friendly vehicles with more mpg than fun versus vehicles like the Hummer that just don't give a darn.  In fact, if you'd recall, one of the famous battles occurred on a Hummer dealership where environmentalists vandalized a lot full of trucks.

There's a war being drawn. And Americans love having choice!
