Americans can be a chauvinist bunch, and no doubt American car enthusiasts believe that any vehicle worth its salt is sold in the United States.
Well, here’s a big surprise. That is not the case. Many of the top world auto makers like BMW, Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz -- gasp! -- limit some of their models for sale outside the U.S. Imagine the audacity!
Forbes, of course, has created a list of several of these vehicles:
- Alfa Romeo Brera. Priced at around $35,375 USD, this Italian made coupe is available only in Europe with a choice of two gas engines.
- Alfa Romeo Spider. A two seater that prices out at $38,350 USD. Creature comforts include hands free phone and voice controls.
- Citroen C6. Safety is a big deal with this car. It has a lane departure warning system, xenon headlamps with washers, and has earned a five star award in 2007 from the European New Car Assessment Program.
- Jaguar X-Type. To be discontinued in the U.S. market, this $41,274 USD vehicle provides creature comforts emphasized with burr walnut wood as an accent in the cabin and a premium sound system.
- Lancia Thesis. Offered by Fiat, this baby provides plenty of safety and creature comforts including ventilated comfort seats and parking assist in the front and rear.
- Mercedes-Benz B-Class. A small, sporty hatchback with a whole lot of creature comforts like sliding armrests, buttons that control the stereo on the steering wheel and also assist in operating the phone and even doing the gear shifting.
- Mercedes-Benz Viano MPV. This car can accommodate up to eight passengers whose rear second and third row of seats can be repositioned into various seating arrangements. Also, the second row can be configured to face the third row to provide a folding table.
- Peugeot 407. A four seater coupe priced out at $28,788 USD, this car features a 2.7 liter V6 that burns diesel.
So why aren't the above vehicles sold in the U.S. The manufactures figure that luxury car buyers here in the States would rather have a roomy sedan or coupe than a small hatchback. True or false? We think the Europeans are showing that they are more chauvinist that we are!
