Car Shopping: Holding back the (Model) Year

Because it's a new year, there are plenty of dealers who are stocked with last year's models. Thus, many potential car buyers are confronted with the question: Should I buy a 2007 model car that is still parked on the lot, or should I buy a newer 2008 model?

Of course, if the year of the model doesn’t matter to you then, by all means, go ahead and purchase that 2007. That’s what a lot of auto pundits are saying. An incentive for you to buy a 2007 can also be that a 2008 model of the same car may not have gone through any “refreshing” and is, in essence, is the same car.

Still more reasons to consider that older model is that many are offered with a rebate of say $2,000 or more. Cha-ching!

But if model year does matter, well, look closely at the car. Reasons to hold out for the same car as a 2008 model is if the new year has changes including new safety equipment. For example, the 2008 Cadillac DTS comes with two new safety features -- blind spot detection, lane departure warning and better brakes. The 2007 model of the car does not have these features.

Other reasons include driving away with the latest technology (e.g., Ford Sync).

Our take? So, if you are observant, shop smart and know what the 2008s have that the 2007s don’t have, then there are bargains out there! Good shopping everyone.
