Acuras, Volvos, Suzukis targeted for Canadian recalls

The top-of-the-line Acura RL has been hit with a Canadian recall affecting all 2005 through 2008 models, as a result of a faulty power-steering hose, which can leak and cause a fire as a result of premature wear and tear.

The Province reports that the faulty hose in the $50,000 car can crack and leak power steering fluid all over the car’s catalytic converter, potentially causing fires.

Newer models of Volvo XC90 SUVs, from the 2007 and 2008 model years, have been affected by a software glitch in the climate-control system that renders the heating and cooling functions inoperable once the key is inserted in the ignition. This could be extremely uncomfortable or dangerous in extremely cold weather, if the heater cannot function. A software update applied by a Canadian Volvo dealer can fix the problem.

About 4500 of Suzuki’s Grand Vitara SUVs have been identified as having a problem with a shift lock module—the device that prevents the transmission shift lever from being shifted out of “Park” when the key is removed from the ignition—that doesn’t work correctly. This affects 2006 and 2007 Grand Vitaras sold in Canada; the dealers will replace the shift lock module with a newer version that works correctly.

Our take? We urge our neighbors up in the Great White North who have not received a recall notice of the affected vehicles to contact their dealership as soon as possible. Winter season continues in both country and the last thing one wants is to be stuck on the road in such weather.
