2007 Auto Ads: Winners and Losers

Have you watched TV recently for a continuous period of time during primetime? It seems that every single commercial on the air is a car commercial. It’s like there is nothing else being sold in the United States of America except cars.

Last year, the Detroit News evaluated those commercials as good or bad (like Santa Clause).

Lexus runs its Christmas commercials showing someone giving their spouse a Lexus with a big red bow attached to the roof. A lot of people don’t like these commercials. They say they are too “smug and arrogant.” Actually, we think they are pretty good. After all it is a season for giving and who else are you going to give the best present to but your spouse, right?

Kia pushed its cars during the holiday season with a take off of movie, Flash Dance. A salesperson dances and prances in a Kia dealership with climax showing him gets drenched with a large bucket full of water. That's taken straight from the movie.

Ugh!! Stinks. And the pundits agree with us on this one.

Now here’s one with a sense of humor. A neighborhood dog gets a gander of a red Toyota Celica parked on a tree-lined street. The dog launches at the car as though it is moving but in fact it is standing still. The styling of the vehicle makes it look like it is in motion. The dog runs right into the rear of the car. Confused. It waits a moment, then walks away depressed. Pretty funny.
