General Motors Number One Million In Chinese Sales

It may be a U.S. auto maker, but GM can offer a great big "thank you" to the Communist Republic of China. The company has become the first global auto maker to sell 1 million vehicles in the country during a calendar year.

GM reached the 100,000 sales level in China in 2002 and 500,000 sales annually in 2005. The company, which currently sells six nameplates in that country, also has seven joint ventures and two fully owned enterprises. Surprisingly to some, it has been selling cars in that country for many, many years. The strongest selling GM brand, according to Wards Auto, is the Buick Park Avenue which it has been selling in China for close to 100 years. Another piece of evidence that China has been good to GM is that the country ranks as one of GM’s largest national markets and second only to North America.

Our take? Some of those Chinese Buicks are lookers and could possibly jump start the admittedly improving brand back home. When are we going to see the all-new Park Avenue, General Motors?

As long as the NA model has more than the weakling 2.8 V6 of the Chinese version. Definitely needs a V8 or bigger V6 for this market.
