Though the Genesis coupe itself has only recently been introduced, and even then only in concept form, at the Los Angeles Auto Show, it is now known what will power it.

Hyundai has now stated, reports Auto Week, that when the production car is introduced in 2009, a turbo inline 4 will be a part of its engine lineup.

The motor will be Hyundai's version of the I-4 created in the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance, a consortium comprised of Hyundai, Chrysler, and Mitsubishi. Though power levels have yet to be determined, we auto enthusiasts should be excited. That motor, which also powers the Lancer EVO and Caliber SRT4, aren't exactly slow let's just say.

Hyundai believes that small displacement, turbos, and direct injection will be its powertrain solution for the coming future.

Our take? It seems that the second coming of the 240-like cars will come from Korea, not Japan.

I came from S. Korea as a teenager and lived in US over 26 years. My opinions about S. Korean auto makers are perhaps more biased than most of people out there. I have owned & leased many different makes and models (most recent lease - 2008 Cayman S) starting with Acura Integra in college, BMW 3 series, 5 series, Mercedes E Class, and couple of luxury SUVs in between. I was on a business trip in Dallas Texas last summer and was offered a Sonata at the rental car agency. I thought, ‘why not?’ This was my first driving experience in Korean automobile. I was mildly shocked by its ride and quality. I honestly thought that Sonata was at par if not better than 2006 Camry I was driving for a company car back home. I don’t know if I will ever own a Hyundai in the future (I still associate Rodney King with the name Hyundai), but I DEFINITELY agree with industry experts saying "Hyundai is making Toyota, GM and others nervous..."
