If you were toying with purchasing the upcoming smart microcar when it's released, well, you're too late. According to Daimler AG (via Auto Week), maker of the smart, more than 30,000 Americans have put in an order for the car along with a deposit so that they can buy the car when it becomes available in January.

That means demand has exceeded the supply in the car's first year.

The smart will be unveiled for public consumption during the first quarter of 2008. Plans call for 50 dealerships to be open and that there will be a total of 65 dealerships by the end of the first quarter with 74 dealerships by the end of 2008. Mercedes-Benz cars will be sold in 33 of those 74 outlets along with the smart. Nine dealerships will be owned by Penske.

And Daimler plans to continue to move forward by planning new models. The company, for example, is seeking an American city in which it can test an all-electric smart just like in Europe. It is also said that the Smart will be available with a diesel engine in the U.S. in the near future.

Our take? The U.S. is the 37th country to be selling the Smart. According to reports, more than 770,000 Smarts have been sold during the last 10 years. It is getting kind of obvious that Americans like the concept of the Smart.

Bring the diesel, please! 40 mpg is kind of embarrassing for a car this small. Ratchet that up to 60 or 70, and it becomes a more attractive proposition.
