You may think that horses are the only racers who have lineage but luxury cars -- especially sports luxury -- cars do, too.
The latest to experience this tie to exotic racing pedigree is Porsche’s 2008 Boxster RS 60 Spyder. According to Auto Week, the car has been inspired by the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring winning 718 RS 60 Spyder race car in design and performance.
The car will be available in silver metallic with the front end based off Porsche’s SportsDesign package. Appearance is further enhanced by a choice of a red leather interior with matching convertible top or dark gray interior with black.
The car’s stance has been widen to push the 19-inch wheels farther out into the wheel arches. Engine is a 3.4 liter boxer 6-cylinder that can generate up to 303 horsepower. With that much power, the Porsche Active Suspension Management system is standard.
The company will build 1,960 for sale with less than 800 of that number to be offered for the North American market. No date of availability or sales price for the U.S. market has been announced by Porsche.
The car is scheduled to debut at the New York Auto Show in March, 2008.
Our take? WE understand why Porsche wants to limit the production of the car. The value of the car soars as a result. Still, it’s a shame that more people will not be given the opportunity to own, stare at and admire this machine that is sure to become a classic in its own right.
