The list of cars with the word Hybrid in their names are getting larger and larger and larger. J.D. Power and Associates (via Consumer Affairs) estimates that 345,000 hybrids will be sold before the end of 2007.

That’s up one-quarter million over what was sold in the U.S. in 2006.

The top hybrids on the market today are the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic.  Others include the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Nissan Altima Hybrid, and the Saturn Aura Green Line. Further details and other hybrids can be found at the original article and below:

•    Saturn Green Line Vue will be unveiled for public sale in the fall of 2008. It will feature a two-mode hybrid drivetrain and will supposedly achieve a net 45 percent improvement in fuel economy over the conventional Vue.

•    Believe it or not, we are on our third generation Toyota Prius. Expect to see these models in late 2008 or 2009. Reports say that we shouldn’t expect to see a hybrid from Toyota with a lithium ion battery for at least two more years.

•    There will also be a new Toyota hybrid in 2009 that will feature a 2.3 liter engine. Because of that engine size, many are expecting that this car will be larger than the present Prius.

•    Toyota is also considering releasing a sports car hybrid dubbed the FT-HS. It is expected to feature rear-wheel drive and is projected to spring from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. Finally, there is also a hybrid from Toyota -- a 7-seat Sienna minivan -- with a 3.5 liter, V-6 expected out, too.

•    A new Lexus hybrid is expected out in 2009. But if you were expecting to save some coin on the purchase price, forget it. Price tag is supposed to be between $40,000 and $70,000.

•    The smart microcar will have a hybrid option. It’s supposed to be a 2-seater subcompact ready for the market by 2009. Fitted with what is called a micro-hybrid system, the new vehicle will  feature a belt-driven starter and generator that turns the engine off when the vehicle is idling.

•    More hybrids will be coming from Honda in 2009. In fact, it is being reported that Honda plans to challenge Toyota for dominance of the hybrid market at about this time. Honda says that the hybrid expected in 2009 will be smaller and less expensive than the hybrids from Honda today -- the Civic -- and will actually be an entirely new vehicle.

•    The two-mode hybrid technology will appear on the General Motors Yukon. Electric motors will be in the transmission which will be part of a 300 horsepower V-8 powertrain. Because of the way the transmission is manufactured, the Yukon hybrid will be able to tow up to 6,000 pounds and will get about a 25 percent fuel savings boost.

•    Cadillac will include an Escalade hybrid in its fleet which will be available in the Spring of 2008.

•    Ford is adding to the hybrid mix with a hybrid Fusion and a hybrid Mercury Milan. Both are expected out by about 2008 or 2009.

•    Hybrids coming from Hyundai and Kia will include the Hyundai Accent and the Kia Rio. Both hybrids will be 5-seaters and are expected to be introduced in 2008 or 2009. The hybrid technology, which will experience a fuel economy of 44 percent improvement over the conventional models, used in these models was developed by Hyundai.

•    Hybrids from Mercedes includes an S-Class that’s due to be at showrooms in 2008. This is said to be equipped with a “mild” hybrid and has a fuel economy improvement of 33 percent over the conventional S-Class models.

•    Audi’s Q7 hybrid midsize SUV is coming in 2008 and will consume 25 percent less gas than a conventional Q7.

•    Look for Porsche to come out with a Panamera hybrid and a Cayenne hybrid.

•    Volkswagen will have a Jetta hybrid out in 2009. Look also for a Toureg SUV hybrid in about 2009 or 2010 as well.
