Exxon, surprisingly, joins the hybrid movement

Question: would a company come up with an innovation that could in the long run cause sales of its major product to plummet?

Yup. Exxon has announced that it has developed a new technology in its chemicals business section that will help the development of better batteries for use on hybrid and electric vehicles.

The innovation is a film that will permit battery makers to construct larger lithium ion batteries that will not overheat, a major flaw in the battery.

Surprisingly, Exxon is not new to the development of lithium ion batteries. According to the Guardian Unlimited, the company has been producing separator films for lithium ion batteries for consumer electronics and other non-automotive technologies for over two decades. But now that it has come out with an innovation that will also affect the production and acceptance of electric cars, what will be the result on sales of its major products -- oil and gasoline?
