For decades, the Ford Crown Victoria ("Crown Vic") Police Interceptor has been the mainstay vehicle of choice for America's police force. Now those days may be numbered.
Ford and its Crown Victoria currently dominate the market, accounting for approximately 80% of the 75,000 car annual market. Rival Chrysler, though, hopes on taking some of that market with its new Dodge Challenger and Magnum police vehicles.
The offerings are gaining ground in the marketplace because of superior performance relative to their competitors. While the ubiquitous Crown Vic hasn’t changed in decades, both Charger and Magnum however are state of the art.
They’re available in both V-6 and 5.7 liter HEMI V-8, for example. Their more modern rear-wheel drive chassis has blessed them with sporting abilities that their competitors could only dream of, and a stability control system ensures it won’t go all pear shaped in extreme situations. Recent test have showed that the HEMI-powered Charger and Magnum placed them at the top in road course times, as well as the sole offerings capable of attaining speeds of 150mph.
GM’s lone offering is the V-6 front wheel-drive Impala.
Our Take? The ability to recognize a Crown Victoria in your mirrors or on the road has never guaranteed you won’t get a ticket, but now it’ll help even less.
