Volkswagen Scirocco: One Sexy Rabbit

The Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit to us in the US) platform has spawned numerous variations. The Audi TT and A3, the Volkswagen Jetta, Eos, and upcoming Tiguan can all lay claim to sharing this basic platform, and one more will be added to the mix. Volkswagen now seeks to revive its old Scirocco name plate.

In its original guise, the Scirocco was a hot little coupe; it seems now though the Scirocco will be sexier versions of Volkswagens current models. Where the Golf/Rabbit is of a standard 2-box body style, the Scirocco will be more coupe like, much in the same way that the Mercedes CLS is a more coupe like rendition of the E-Class. Its styling should be reminiscent of the IROC concept, still a hatch, but a little lower, a little wider, and with a more rakish backlight.

Unfortunately, where its styling is bespoke, the limitations of its sharing its chassis with Golf/Rabbit show through when it comes to making go as well as it looks. Expect powertrains to be much like those available throughout the VW fold; 5-cylinder, 4-cylinder turbo, and of course, the VR-6.

What’s yet to be seen however, is whether or not we here in the states will even be getting the Scirocco. If it’s too sporty, it’ll encroach upon GTI territory, too upscale and it’ll be in R32 territory.

Our take? A Golf is still a Golf…or Rabbit. Give as a real Scirocco, worthy of the nameplate.
