2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI to debut at Tokyo Motor Show

Finally, after weeks of nothing more than dimly lit, purposefully discreet, publication photos, the new Subaru Impreza WRX STi has been revealed.

It doesn't disappoint.

Blistered wheel arches dominate the new look, but these too have been joined by a new front fascia, rear clip, and side skirts. Where there was once a wing a fighter plane could be proud of there is now a large, rooftop spoiler. Subtly lowered and featuring larger wheels and tires, the look of the STi is no longer bar room boisterous but instead subtly aggressive.

Though technical details remain scarce, conclusions may be drawn. That lowered suspension signifies handling upgrades from the base WRX. Bigger wheels mean bigger brakes and sportier rubber. Front fender blisters that terminate in vents and a prominent hood scoop signal the power that lay underneath. But the most important detail of all? Every successive generation of the fast Impreza's has proven to be more capable than the previous, and the previous STi was definitely no slouch.

Our take? America's latest hot hatch is on fire. After the let down that was the introduction of the standard WRX, it's simply wonderful to see that the addition of blistered fenders and the typical fascia tweaks has created a looker of a car. Not pretty for sure, but its intent comes through strong much like the Lancia Delta Integrale's of the past, it simply looks the part of a rally replica.

It's an old adage for sure, but with cars like this and the new Evo, and so many others, "It's a great time to be a car guy". The muscle car era has nothing on this one.
