Safest Cars for the Family

Forbes magazine recently asked experts in the field to list what they considered to be the safest family cars. They based their decisions on such things as whether the car had electronic stability control, side-curtain airbags, and good crash test results. They also considered reliability and risk.

Here are the top 15:

  1. Kia Sedona
  2. Honda Pilot
  3. Ford Taurus X
  4. Acura MDX
  5. Hyundai Santa Fe
  6. Subaru Tribeca
  7. Honda CR-V (pictured)
  8. Acura RDX
  9. Subaru Legacy
  10. Ford Taurus
  11. Mercury Sable
  12. Kia Optima
  13. Hyundai Entourage
  14. GMC Acadia
  15. Buick Enclave

These experts tend to identify the four-door, midsize or large cars as a "near-sure bet." That's because they have good crash test ratings, low death rates and low insurance claims rates.

More details can be found at Forbes. Our take? It's interesting to see how crossovers/SUVs dominate the list. Maybe there is something to be said about "size equalling safety." That, or drivers of smaller, sportier cars just push their machines just a bit too much to make the list.
