Will Volkswagen Up! Concept lift Sales?

The Volkswagen Up!, first unveiled at Frankfurt, calls to mind the original Volkswagen Beetle. No, it isn't a retro styling exercise; it's not even called Beetle, but instead the embodiment of everything the Beetle was. Compact, inexpensive, but practical and roomy for four, the Up! is more of a people's car than any current VW. It's even rear engined and rear-wheel drive.

Since the tastes of markets and demographics may very, Volkwagen intends to release minivan variant of the Up! at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, and a hybrid version at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. The numerous variations enhances the chances for profitable production. Entry level models could be created easily as well.

Our take? Several versions of the Up! have been promised, and all are intended to be true people's cars like VW's of old. This would be a wonderful change of direction for VW, and this author for one would love to see a Baja version.
