Chevrolet Volt to be Built All-American

Perhaps without permission from General Motors or -- in a calculated effort to assure that automaker sticks to its agreement -- the United Auto Workers Union announced that GM has promised that the construction of its future cars like the Chevrolet Volt will be done by plants in Detroit.

The Detroit News reports that, according to the union, General Motors has committed to 'unprecedented job commitments' in building future cars domestically. But, at the same time, it admitted that concessions of lower wages to its workers were made to do so.

The union says that General Motors has made specific product commitments to 16 assembly plants in 11 states. Product to be developed include a luxury SUV for Cadillac,  a pickup version of the Hummer H3, a new Chevy four-door, and the Chevy Volt (pictured is the concept).

The Volt will be built at the Poletown assembly plant starting in 2010.

Similar commitments have been made to parts plants across the country.

Our take? Sorry, but we're not buying it. We don't see GM chaining itself and its future to the whims of the union again. And if the automaker did make such a compromise, we see the company's future unsure. Again.
