Due to the agreement between General Motors and the United Auto Workers Union, automobile journalists have had a chance to peek behind the curtain and see what GM has planned for its future products.
Vehicles coming out that are expected to compete well in the market include the Chevy Volt concept, a Cadillac CTS sports wagon, and the Chevy Traverse, a large crossover.
The Cadillac crossover is expected to carry the name BRX and to compete with BMW and Mercedes. The CTS wagon is expected to compete with BMW and Audi.
A new Corvette and Cadillac XLR are slated for 2012. A HUMMER pickup, said to be called the H3T, is said to be based on a concept vehicle shown in 2004 (pictured).
The Traverse will be built on a similar platform as the popular Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook, and GMC Acadia. The Saturn Astra, which is based on the European Opel Astra, is expected to arrive next year.
Pundits also like the idea that some GM models that have not lit the world on fire will be either discontinued or replaced with better vehicles. Some models that may be dropped include the Pontiac G5 and the Chevrolet Cobalt. Sources say that GM has committed to these cars up to 2009.
More details can be found at Detroit News. Our take? Apparently, GM does not like to comment on future products. So, no doubt, they are probably perturbed with the UAW for letting the cat out of the bag, so to speak.
