General Motors puts a Zero into Consumer Car Loans

The crunch is on.

Dealerships need to get rid of their stock of 2007s so that they can take on the new 2008s. In order to help its dealerships empty their lots, General Motors is using several strategies to get people into the showroom.

The first is offering no interest loans. Such loans can run as much as five years on some Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierra pickups. The incentive is in effect through October 1.

One thousand dollar discounts are also being offered on 2007 Chevrolet Impalas, Saturn Ion, as well as the GMC Yukon SUVs. Even 2008 Buick Lucernes and Pontiac G6s are being offered with the $1,000 discount.

Still, despite the incentives, pundits say that General Motors will be stuck with a lot of light trucks. Evidence can be seen with sales figures for this year through August showing a decline in sales of Silverados of 2.2 percent while Sierra sales dropped 2.4 percent. Large pickups account for about one-quarter of General Motors' overall sales in the U.S.
