So what's up with the development of the 2010 Ford Mustang?

Well, we know that we will be seeing a lot of Shelby models coming out prior to 2010. But what about 2010 and beyond? Mustang fans want to know!

Well, there are plans afoot to create a new Mustang in mid-2009 for the 2010 model year. According to TheMustangNews, this new pony is expected to carry a V8 engine that allows for more power and torque. Speculation is that the V8 may be the new BOSS engine which is supposed to come in two sizes -- a 5.8 and a 6.2 liter. That's right in line to what rivals General Motors will be offering in its upcoming Camaro and Chrysler in its soon-to-be-released Challenger.

It can be noted, also, that the V8s will mostly likely feature cylinder deactivation technology for better fuel economy to meet new CAFE regulatoins.

On the other hand, Ford also has that V6 that appears on the new Taurus, Edge, and Lincoln MKZ which generates about 265 horsepower and that could be ideal for the base model Mustang. Another alternative is a 3.7 liter engine that could be used.

Finally, there is the Twin Force V6 engine that first appeared on the new Lincoln MK-R concept car. This 3.5 liter twin-turbo produces about 400 horsepower and is supposed to be more efficient than a V8 with equal power. TheMustangNews did a poll to find out what engine Mustang lovers would prefer. The survey revealed that most want the Twin Force engine (of course).

As far as appearance is concerned, the talk is that the 2010 Mustang will include features seen on the Guigiaro Concept Mustang exhibited last year.

Our take? So there you have it.  We know, we know -- here's not enough here. But it seems that Ford is keeping things tight to the vest. We guess with the history of the Mustang and its ever growing popularity, who can blame them. Besides, a little mystery never hurt the unveiling of a new car.

It's almost obligatory that you offer a V-8 in a Mustang. The traditionalists will demand it. But the TwinForce is an intriguing option. The 3.5 should have happened like last year. Any word if it's still going to be live axle or if it's finally going to IRS?
