Jaguar XF In Line For 500hp

While most car companies are figuring out ways to scale down their cars for better fuel mileage, Jaguar is throwing down the gauntlet and revving things up to produce more horsepower.

The new car that will get the big boom is the upcoming Jaguar XF sedan.

While the auto maker is still hush-hush about the details, auto pundits have been able to find out is that the XF will be equipped with a 4.2 liter, V8 engine that can produce 420bhp. Jaguar, of course, is saying no; apparently, it has another, more powerful engine in the works.

The production XF will come out in the winter with a choice of four engines -- a 2.7 liter V6 diesel engine; a 3.0 liter V6 gas engine; a 4.2 liter gas engine; and a supercharged 4.2 liter V8.

But its the new engine, a 5.0 liter V8 with supercharger, will produce 500 hp and about 500 lb. ft of torque, that has everyone's attention. Currently, it is in development now and will be used on the XFR as well as an upcoming Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

The S-Type replacement is slated to appear at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year. That's where final specifications for the production version will be announced.

More details can be found at Autocar. Our take? Jaguar is currently in a battle for its very survival as speculation continues that parent company Ford has put it and sibling Land Rover on the auction block. While the all-new XK has been doing well, Jaguar needs another hit for the brand to sustain itself regardless on who's the owner. The more powerful engine will again show the discriminating public that the brand has the claws not only to keep up with the competition, but surpass them.
