Alternative Fuel Interest Continues To Grow

Is anyone surprised that the sale of new alternative fuel vehicles are being driven by the higher cost of gas? If so, you shouldn't be.

But to prove the point, R.L. Polk and Company has released a study that shows that there were more than 190,000 alternative-fuel vehicles navigating the roads of Louisiana in 2006. That's an increase of 28 percent over 2005.

A breakdown as to the number of each alternative fuel vehicle shows that there are 2,633 hybrid electric vehicles (e.g., Toyota Prius), 92,631 flex-fuel vehicles (e.g., Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Titan, Chevrolet Monte Carlo), and 95,171 vehicles that use "clean" diesel (at least by Louisana standards).

The Polk study also reports that 1.5 million alternative fuel autos were sold in the United States in 2006. That is 50 percent better than sales expectations. Moreover, the 2006 sales brings the total number of alternative fuel cars in the U.S. to 10.5 million.

Our take? With gasoline prices predicted to rise--and stay--around $3 a gallon, we see interest in alternatives to continue to increase as well.
