United Auto Group, the world's second largest auto retailer, reports that, in just a five week period, it has received deposits for the new Mini from 12,600 people. Note that this is for a car that is expected to be showrooms later next year!
Can you blame the consumer? The Smart gets 40 miles a gallon and its price of about $12,000.
It's the size--similar to a golf cart--that makes this car fuel efficient. However, it is anything but a golf cart, having more technological innovations than many cars already on the highways and byways of the U.S. And despite the small size, the car has been certified with four star crash worthiness.
Also, according to the Albuquerque Tribune, United Auto kicked off its marketing campaign for the new Mini somewhat early (i.e., in March). The program encourages potential buyers to buy on a waiting list for a modest deposit of $99.
