Chrysler To Bring Rugged Jeep Branding Into Chinese Market

CHINAdaily reports that Chrysler is looking to return to China with the intention on reintroducing its Jeep vehicles to the Middle Kingdom.

And it won't be easy. According to Simon Elliot, president and chief executive officer of the Chrysler Group (China) Sales, Jeep’s competitors in China are not considered to be the same as its competitors in the U.S. and other parts of the world. In China, it is going up against low and medium segments usually filled by, for example, Ford. Elsewhere, Jeep competes against Land Rover, Volvo, Toyota, and Volkswagen. (Pictured is the new Jeep Patriot.)

Our take? How much will the difference affect things? Well, as they say, the jury is out.

Who is building the Cherokee in China now? There is a website advertising the old Cherokee as I write this. If Chrysler wants to introduce Chinese made vehicles in the U.S. why don't they start with the old tried and true Cherokee (from China). They sold millions of them, theres name recognition, parts, and if it could be sold for somewhere in the low $10's, here, they would sell well here again. Working out the bugs vis a vis emissions, safety etc. would be a lot cheaper than introducing a whole unknown and untested product line. Like Ford 500 vs Ford Taurus. Might be a little rough for the champagne/caviar set buying the new Jeep lines, but screw them anyway.
