The all-new Toyota Tundra took a hit in reputation recently when it secured only 4 stars out of 5 on crash tests administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The less than full rating means there's an 11 to 20 percent chance of injury in a frontal crash as opposed to 10 percent or less with a 5-star rating. Toyota spokesperson Bill Kwong was surprised since the automaker, following the NHTSA's guidelines, achieved the all five stars in its own tests.

Similar pickups from automakers such as Ford and GM achieved the five star rating.

Our take? There was more than hint of fear among rivals when Toyota announced details about its all new Tundra, part of its justified. The Tundra is, in many ways, equal to its more established rivals. This latest piece of news strikes us like the paparazzi and an over-eager press hovering over movie stars as they wait, impatiently, to either burp or punch one of the too-close cameras.
