Pontiac Vibe-rations in the key of "G"

Pontiac ought to just change its marketing tagline to something like, "Gee, that’s a Pontiac?" Or, perhaps, "Gee, that Pontiac really flies!" Or, "Gee, I gotta get me one of those!"

In short, play up the "gee" angle, since it seems as if the division brass is *** on making all of its models conform to the new letter-G-plus-number naming scheme. The midsize sedan is G6, the formerly Canada-only Chevy Cobalt clone is the G5, and the soon-to-be rebadged Holden Commodore appears in Pontiac drag next year as the G8.

While the iconic Solstice roadster is keeping its name (for now!), sources are spreading the word that the Pontiac Vibe (née Toyota Matrix) is set to show its upcoming iteration at the New York Auto Show in April--and with its new look may come a new name, though which digit should be appended to the G isn't known at this time.

Toyota will also be unveiling a new Matrix, though its being coy about the details, the release (or show) date, and even whether it will still be called the Matrix (some have floated the idea that the replacement will be called the "Blade," instead).

Our take? Logically, with the Pontiac G5 being a small car, the G6 an intermediate, and the G8 being a large, we'd place our money on the next Vibe being either the G3, G4, or G7—with the G7 making the most sense, to our ears. We'll know more come April.
