Do you want to reserve a place in line to become one of the first Americans to inspect the DaimlerChrysler Smart Fortwo when it is released in the U.S.?
But first, some details. The smart (yes, it's with a small 's') Fortwo is a subcompact car sold in Europe and set to arrive in the States next year. The two seater is 8.8 feet long, 5.1 feet tall, and 5.1 feet wide. Tiny. It has a top speed of about 90 mph and gets more than 40 miles per gallon under normal driving conditions.
The car will also be equipped with electronic stability program (ESP), anti-lock braking, four airbags, and will be protected by steel reinforcement also called "Tridion Safety Cell." Base model (also called Pure), will carry a price of under $12,000, but does not include a radio. The Passion model is priced at $14,000 and with that you get the radio. The Cabrio model costs $17,000.
According to European Car Magazine blog, you simply have to go online and log on to the Smart website, register, and pay a fee of $99. Note, though, that being in "line" does not necessary guarantee that you will actually get a car. If your order cannot be filled, the $99 registration fee will be returned.
Smart, Robert Penske, and United Auto Group are working together to bring the Fortwo to the U.S. market. The car should start to appear in dealerships in the first quarter of 2008. So far, more than 750,000 Fortwos have been sold.
The plan is to deliver 20,000 Fortwos to the U.S. market in the first year.
