SUVs And Other Such Trash

Like Nostradamus, car analysts have been making predictions. And a lot of what they are saying are aimed at the SUV. It appears that the consensus is that the SUV, like Communism, will soon be relegated to the trash.
One analyst disagrees. He’s Phil McNamara, car editor for Carmagazine, a British online publication.
McNamara admits that SUV sales dropped in 2006. The consensus reasons for the decline has been congestion, rising fuel prices, possible parking tax, etc.
But McNamara asserts that the decline was due to the fact that the popular Land Rover Freelander, Toyota RAV4, and the Honda CR-V were all “on run out in 2006.” So demand dropped because supply dropped.
From there, he points out that people want the SUV simply because it's simply more spacious. It can carry a load whether it be people or cargo. He also points out that Ford, Vauxhall, Chevrolet and Volkswagen will be releasing mid-size SUVs soon, a reflection that SUVs are here to stay.
'...expect the 4x4 market to grow -- not shrink -- over the next couple of years,' writes McNamara. He also notes that SUVs will be saved by the diesel engine. He points to the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover which are now equipped with a V8 diesel engine. Sales of those two vehicles have been rising in the UK. And the diesel engine, he argues, will and is already making them more green than petrol (gasoline) versions.
