In 2006, the automaker recalled over five million of its SUVs, trucks, and vans. An issue with the cruise control system had been discovered that could potentially lead to engine fires. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which investigated the matter, brake fluid from the cruise control system could leak into the engine's electrical system and damage it, causing it to overheat and trigger a fire. The government agency had received over 1,400 complaints on Ford, with 65 of them reporting engine fires.
Ford is issuing the latest recall due to an internal investigation on its own part. Vehicles affected include the 2003 F-150, F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty pickup; the Ford Excursion SUV; and the Lincoln Blackwood pickup (pictured). Ford will update the involved cruise control switch at no charge to the owner.
