2009 Ford Escort: The Return

One of the latest developments coming out of the autosphere is Ford’s plans to develop a subcompact car to compete against the new Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and Nissan Versa, as well as the refreshed Chevrolet Aveo.

Virtually nothing is known about this compact, not even a name. But a lack of knowledge is not going to stop the folks over at Automobile Magazine blog. The AM staff poured over the archives and pounded their heads just to name the unnamed car. Ka? What is that, some sort of Egyptian New Wave idol?

Festiva? As AM pointed out, unknown names will probably cause confusion among the non-enthusiast consumer. (Can anyone spell Five Hundred-now-Taurus?) Finally, all choices narrowed down to one: Escort.

After getting over the initial excitement, AM did a rendering of what the new Escort may look like. Ford announced it will base the subcompact on Mazda’s new Mazda 2. The AM staff applied some image magic where you can see the final result here.

Hopefully the return of the old names at Ford signals a change for Detroit as a whole--too many times they abandon the old names, figuring they're too "damaged." Then they spend millions trying to make people aware of the new name, only to damage that one as well with an underperforming product, and start over again.

i'm thinking the same thing, too, mkaresh. i used to drive an escort and it was fine (bit underpowered, though. but so was the corolla at that time, too).
