Chrysler is looking more like a teen looking for date to the prom than an auto company all but abandoned by partner master Mercedes Benz. The latest prospective savior? Volkswagen.

The news is not surprising. The two automakers already plan to build a minivan to be sold under the VW’s brand. But a spokesperson for Europe’s largest automaker nixed rumors of any acquisition plans.

Our take? Like GM, Hyundai, and Mitsubishi, Volkswagen is in the midst of some serious restructuring as they struggle to keep or expand market share while cutting costs. Volkswagen, which has its own extensive portfolio of brands (e.g., Audi, Skoda, etc.), would be as overwhelmed as German rival Mercedes-Benz discovered when it merged with Chrysler to form DaimlerChrysler. GM, again, continues to look more and more like the struggling automaker’s prom prince.
