As previously posted, Audi planned to expand its model line from its current 22 to 40 vehicles by 2015. In an interview published by the German newspaper, Allgemeine Zeitung, Stadler reacted strongly to the suggestion that compact cars could not be profitable. It was then mentioned, for the first time, how he anticipates Audi selling over 100,000 of the new A1 in Europe.
Our take? So the A1 existence and production is most likely confirmed. Does that mean us Yanks will be seeing it in the next couple of years? Depends. Audi looks to position the A1 against BMW’s 1-Series or even the MINI Cooper. That fact doesn’t mean that the automaker will bring over the compact across the pond, though. Volkswagen, which owns Audi, is currently undergoing its own changes as it revamps its lineup and production plans. We’re crossing our fingers that the latter includes exporting the tiny car to the U.S.
