Jim Press, head of Toyota North America, was asked if the world’s second largest automaker had any intent in acquiring Chrysler.
"We don't have any particular interest in acquiring other companies," said Press, adding that Toyota’s expansion program is not based on such mergers.
Our take? We were surprised the question was even asked. Toyota, which is in the midst of rolling out its all-new Tundra pickup, is struggling to control its growth. Already there are rumours that the vaunted “Toyota quality” is beginning to suffer under the strain. The last thing it needs is trying to manage another automaker, and a troubled one at that. We suspect that last year’s surprise GM/Nissan merger has the media seeing merger everywhere.
