Is that a Durango in the HOV lane or am I seeing things?

During DaimlerChrysler’s “Recovery and Transformation Plan” presentation this week, Chrysler mentioned, as part of its “stronger lineup product” plans, that it will be utilizing the hybrid engine co-developed by Mercedes-Benz with BMW and General Motors.

One of the first recipients to receive the engine will be the Dodge Durango. According to Chrysler, the new engine may actually be combined with the brand’s (in)famous HEMI engine. While there are no official specs at this time, representatives are confident that the HEMI-hybrid fuel economy will increase by as much as 25 percent.

Our take? We’re cautiously optimistic that such plans may bolster Durango sales which have taken a beating as Americans switch to fuel-efficient cars and crossovers. The big factor? Price.
