The 2014 Subaru BRZ will enter its second model year with a price bump, but one that won’t deter enthusiasts looking to get behind the wheel of the automaker’s budding star. From the early phases of its co-development with the Scion FR-S, the Subaru BRZ was meant to be an accessible, fun sports car. A price increase of only $100 will emphasize that accessibility.
The 2014 Subaru BRZ is available in two trims: a Premium trim that comes with the standard six-speed manual transmission only; and a top-of-the-line Limited trim, available with the manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Regardless of trim or transmission, the 2014 Subaru BRZ will be powered by the same 2.0-liter, four-cylinder “boxer” engine as last year, capable of 200 horsepower. Since its debut–and perhaps before–speculation has been circling as to whether or not Scion and Subaru would add another, more powerful variant. Scion has admitted that it is testing a variety of options, including adding a turbocharger, replacing the 2.0-liter engine with a larger 2.5-liter version, or using a hybrid system that pulls additional power from an electric motor and battery pack. It appears Subaru will also make a more powerful STI version, set to debut next year.
The 2014 Subaru BRZ Premium with the six-speed manual transmission will start at $26,390 after delivery, while the same transmission with the Limited trim will begin at $28,390. If you prefer an automatic transmission, add another $1,100, to give you a starting price of $29,490. Wondering what the higher price of the Limited trim gives you? Fog-lights and a body-colored trunk spoiler on the outside. On the inside, there are a number of upgrades, including dual-zone automatic climate control instead of manual air conditioning controls. The seats also get a dual-mode heating function, and are dressed with Alcantara inserts and leather bolsters, and the front door courtesy lights illuminate when the doors are open. A full security system also upgrades the engine immobilizer feature that is standard on all BRZ models.
