Believe it or not, Mercedes-Benz actually makes vehicles that excel in a harsh working environment. No, we’re not talking about the GL-Class or even the SLS (although it would be wildly entertaining to see an SLS AMG try to outrun a Sidewinder missile). We’re thinking more along the lines of the bulletproof Unimog or the G-Class SUV, both of which serve in various militaries around the world. Then there’s the Sprinter van. While it may not be the ideal military vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter can hold its own in a fast-paced and unforgiving working environment, and the German automaker is rolling out a refreshed version for the 2014 model year.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter will sport features like a 2.1-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, rated at 161 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, and with a new seven-speed automatic transmission, it’s is now the standard form of motivation. The familiar 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel, rated at 188-hp and 325 lb-ft of torque, is carried over for the latest model year, but is only mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. No matter which engine you choose, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is available in a 144-inch and 170-inch wheelbase, respectively. Both engines can pull three different body styles, have an available high-roof option, and can be configured as a cargo, crew, passenger, minibus, or cab chassis van.
Exterior styling tweaks for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter include a new front grille, headlights, bumper, hood, and LED turning signals. On the inside, both the steering wheel and shifter have been redesigned while a 5.8-inch screen, which includes Bluetooth and an audio input, is now included as well. New optional features include a navigation system, iPod integration, air suspension for the 3500 models, a low roof for chassis cab models, the Lane Package, and the Safety Assistance Package. The Lane Package includes blind spot assist, lane keeping assist, and adaptive high beam assist. As for the Safety Package, that includes blind spot assist and collision prevention assist.
Mercedes-Benz has announced that the new Sprinter will go on sale in the fall of this year.
