The 2014 Mazda6 midsize sedan goes on sale this month, and the stylish 6′s just released EPA fuel economy ratings put it at the top of the class. The 2014 Mazda6 will come with a choice of manual or automatic six-speed transmission, and the manual receives ratings of 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. The automatic model bumps those numbers up 1 mpg, to 26/38 mpg. The Nissan Altima is the only car in the class to receive a marginally better rating, with 27/38 mpg. It also places the Mazda6 slightly ahead of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion, and Hyundai Sonata, and far ahead of the worst-in-class Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger, at 20/31 mpg. A 2.2-liter diesel engine will be available in the 2014 Mazda6 in the second half of this year, but the EPA has not yet released ratings for that powertrain.
A couple of weeks ago we were able to gauge near official pricing on the 2014 Mazda6, and we now have exact starting prices. The entry level Mazda6 i Sport with a six-speed manual transmission will start at $21,675, or $120 less than we estimated. The i Sport comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control and push-button start. The automatic model adds a 5.8-inch media screen with backup camera, Bluetooth, and Pandora internet radio connectivity.
The mid-level Mazda6 i Touring starts at $25,290, and adds 19-inch wheels, dual-climate control, leatherette power-seats. The top-of-the-line 2014 Mazda6 i Grand Touring is priced starting $30,290, within $5 of our original estimation. Included among the many possible upgrades are leather seats, steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters, HID headlights, and heated seats.
